The Choices We Have
Recent studies have shown that almost 85 percent of our risk of disease is not genetic but environmental. More specifically, we might say that chronic disease is primarily driven by behavior – people making choices about diet, physical activity, sleep, stress management, light exposure, etc., on a daily basis. This fact has profound implications.
Sometimes those choices are ones that we make without knowing the consequence. We didn’t have any control over the environment we were born into. We didn’t have any control over what our mothers ate while they were pregnant with us. Or if there was lead paint on the walls next to our cribs.
Sometimes those choices are ones we make knowing that they aren’t great for us.
That quick late-night drive-through to grab a burger and fries.
That third glass of wine that will most definitely leave a headache in the morning.
Reaching for the bread basket at dinner.
Those are the kinds of choices we can have control over.
It means that changing our behavior and getting support in our decision to make a change in your life are the most important steps you can take to prevent and reverse chronic disease.
And while you didn’t get to choose what environment you were born in, you were born into a body that is always working to heal. Yes, your body’s natural state is to try to heal. It’s like your body is always in the mechanic shop, busy healing itself.
And you can take steps to help it heal.
Diet – selecting whole natural foods that meet your individual nutritional needs;
Environment – getting fresh air, pure water, and appropriate sunshine, and avoiding environmental stressors such as air and water pollution, and excess exposure to dust, pollen, chemicals, and noise;
Activity – engaging in regular aerobic exercise and getting adequate rest and sleep; and
Psychology – engaging in productive activity and developing the interpersonal social skills necessary for a successful life.
When the requirements of health are appropriately provided, the self-healing mechanisms of the body attempt to restore and optimize health. Your body’s ability to do this is only limited by your inherent constitution (genetics) and the amount of use and abuse that has taken place.
This is where Integrative Health Coaching comes in.
The problem is that most physicians don’t know how to help people change. They simply say “you need to lose weight.” And people generally aren’t trained either in how to help themselves in a way that the change is lasting – and achievable.
